What is the Wii? Some might say it’s the pinnacle of innovation. Others might say it brings the family together. Others might say it’s a big pile of dust collecting white plastic filled with last generation technology.Whatever could I possible mean by that last part? Few actually know that the Wii is pretty much a Gamecube console in a new shell, with some accelerometer controllers thrown in to spark the flames of innovation. At first it certainly seemed lots of innovation was on its way, there seemed a lot of potential in what the Wii could offer and so far it has become the biggest fad in gaming. That it continues to sell is a mystery to many gamers right now.
The next thing that is on the cards is also totally unheard of today in the industry. Normally the cost of a games console goes down during its lifetime. The Wii has yet to do that, and despite being a console that is the same basic architecture of last generation’s underperformer the Gamecube, it also launched at £180. The Gamcube launched in the UK at £130. So news that the cost of the Wii might actually be going up, is firstly a surprise and secondly utterly bewildering when you consider the profits Nintendo are already making on just sales of the console alone.
Kotaku are reporting that the trade price of Wii consoles is going up, which may very well force the retailers to increase the RRP of the console in the UK. Nintendo blame the currency conversion from Yen to Pound and vice versa, like any of us understand it. Is the price of the Wii about to go up? With the hardware in the box being so technologically outdated, the Wii is already overpriced, price increases are just madness.
I can’t wait for the Wii to die out before I’m getting killed by grannies on Call of Duty. That coming from a once die hard Nintendo fan too.
